From Baghdad to Hong Kong

Extracts from a letter sent by Mr. Freddy Zelouf to Mr. M. Ben-Porat

Dear Mr. Ben Porat,

I have some photographs taken in October 1975 on an occasion when both my sister Yvonne and I had the pleasure of meeting Lord Kadoorie and his wife, his brother Horace and his son Michael, when we were visiting Hong Kong whilst on holiday.

The history of the event giving rise to the taking of these photographs dates back to 1924, when both my grandfather Yehuda and my father Reuben welcomed Sir Eli Kadoorie and his two sons, Lawrence and Horace, to Baghdad on the occasion of the opening of the Laura Kadoorie School for Girls in that city. Subsequently, my father had impressed upon me that, should I ever have the opportunity, I should pay my respects to the Kadoorie family, whom his family had entertained during their visit bo Baghdad. The visit with my sister to Hong Kong afforded me with just such an opportunity, resulting in our being so pleasantly entertained in return to lunch by Lord Kadoorie and his family at their country estate near the Chinese border, followed by supper with Michael and the son of the French Ambassador to Peking, completed by a tour of the sights of Hong Kong. The following day, we met Horace, who took us to his office to see his world-renowned collection of jade. He then drove us to his agricultural school where these particular photographs were taken.
