EVENTS AT THE CENTER
THE ANNUAL GALA
Yigal Lushi, Managing Director

It seems that many members of the community have always looked forward to the grand annual Gala. To them, it is not just spending another pleasant evening. It is a chance to meet close friends, hear the latest news about the Center, contribute their donations and, perhaps, to discover some surprising event.
And indeed, in the latest annual Gala that took place at Gan Oranim in Tel-Aviv, an unexpected pleasant surprise awaited hundreds of guests: an auction of various Judaic items of sterling silver once belonging to Iraqi Jews, which were being displayed in Amman's market and bought by Mr. Arie Shemesh, Deputy Chairman of the Center, and Mr. Shaul Shahrabani.

The Center's Chairman, Mr. Mordechai Ben-Porat, opened the evening with a review of the Center's activities and its future plans. He said that since its formal opening, the museum had been visited by over 250,000 visitors including 120,000 pupils. Building the second floor will allow more visitors to participate in activities within. He described the bureaucratic and financial difficulties, which have accompanied the project.
General Director Yigal Loushi reported that during the fund-raising evening, over NIS 300,000 was collected and allotted for building the second floor of the museum. This year's attraction proved to be "the brick". For a NIS 2,000 ($ 500) donation one can acquire, symbolically, a brick for the continuation of the project. It seems that many Iraqi Jews, and others, seek to acquire a brick in memory of close family relatives who have passed away.

As usual, many public figures participated in the gala: present were the President of the State of Israel Mr. Moshe Katzav and his wife, the Deputy Defense Minister Mr. Ephraim Sneh, the Minister-in-Charge of Social Welfare Mr. Ra'anan Cohen, M.P. Avi Yehezkel and the Mayor of Or-Yehuda Adv. Yitzhak Bokhobza.  >>>
