EVENTS AT THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE
90 YEARS AFTER THE DEMISE OF RABBI YOSEF HAYYIM

A large public gathering and the prominent leaders of Or-Yehuda participated in a study day, commemorating 90 years of the departure of the grandest of Babylon's Rabbis, Rabbi Yosef Hayyim, which took place at the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center at the end of the year 1999. For this occasion, the Center has published a booklet compiling works on Rabbi Yosef Hayyim entitled: "Rabbi Yosef Hayim - Studies & Literature". The study day commenced with introductory speeches from Mr. Mordechai Ben-Porat, Chairman of the Center, Advocate Itzhak Bokhobza, Mayor of Or-Yehuda, the Director of the Heritage Department at the Ministry of Education and the Rabbi of Or-Yehuda. Mr. Yigal Loushi, Director of the Center, delivered the greetings.


The first session of the day commenced with an introductory speech given by Prof. Itzhak Avishur, the Scientific Director of the Center. The first lecture was given by Prof. Shlomo Deshen of Tel-Aviv University on "Rabbi Yosef Hayyim's studies on status and honor". Prof. Shaul Regev of Bar-Ilan University spoke of "Rabbi Yosef Hayyim's sermons". Prof. Avishur closed the session with a lecture entitled "The Arabic & Hebrew folk literature of Rabbi Yosef Hayyim".
The second session was conducted by Prof. Shmuel Moreh, Chairman of the Academic Council at the center. This session began with a lecture from Jacob Zamir on the subject "the writings of Rabbi Yosef Hayyim in old and new prints". The brothers Herzl and Balfour Hakak, both writers and poets, lectured on "The missed messianic opportunity according to the fable and its morals in the Rabbi's writings". The second session was brought to a close by Dr. Zvi Yehuda, The Director of the Research Institute of Babylonian Jewry, who lectured on "Public Activities of Rabbi Yosef Hayyim". The study day ended with a rich artistic program that included a lecture by Prof. Amnon Shiloah of the Hebrew University on the subject of "Religious poetry of Rabbi Yosef Hayyim and their musical scores", when some of the poems were recited, accompanied by their various musical compositions.
