BOOK REPORT

SINO-JUDAICA

Ocassional Papers of the Sino-Judaic Institute

Vol. 4 (2003), 124p.

Volume four of Sino-Judaica focuses on the entrepreneurial diaspora of Baghdadi Jews in South, Southeast and East Asia between the middle of the nineteenth and the middle of the twentieth century. The volume, edited by Dr. Chiara Betta in association with Al Dien, was conceived by a panel discussing Baghdadi Jews and presented at the annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Chicago in 2001. The first four articles, be Prof. Joan G. Roland, Dr. Joan Bieder, Dr. Caroline Pluss and Dr. Chiara Betta, analyse various themes related to the Baghdadi Jewish experience in India, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai whilst the concluding one, by Marcia Ristaino, provides a much needed analytical framework for an overall understanding of the entrepreneurial diaspora  of Baghdadi Jews. The volume represents a preliminary portrayal of Baghdadi Jewish communities from Bombay to Shanghai, and does not have any pretension to be the definitive work on this fascinating thread of Jewish history.
