IN MEMORIAM

Abraham Chitayat

The passing away of Advocate Abraham (Akram) Chitayat in January 2002 left his family and his many friends grief-stricken. The deceased was a model of courtliness and gentlemanly behavior at its best.

It is difficult to describe his kind-heartedness and the optimism which he radiated towords  all those who surrounded him.

Abraham Chitayat came from an affluent family, blessed with eleven children. He was born in Baghdad in 1924 and in 1951 immigrated to Israel where he married his late wife Regina, who gave birth to their four children. Abraham Chitayat occupied a number of public offices in Israel: member of the Labor Party secretariat in Ramat Gan, Labor Party representative in Ramat Gan Municipality and member of the Labor Union in Ramat Gan. He was active in organizing public events and tours.

In 1979, disappointed by the Labor Party"s leaders unfulfilled promises to him, he left with all his family members for New York. Two years later his wife Regina passed away.

Chitayat continued his public activities among the Babylonian Community in New York too. Due to his pleasant disposition and important activities, he was elected president of the Iraqi Jewish Community in New York.

In 1985, he remarried, Ida, and with her, recaptured his happiness. In 1997, in spite of his financial and public success, Abraham Chitayat decided to return to Israel to restart his practice as a lawyer. In his humble office at Ramat Gan, he continued to serve his clients faithfully and with dedication. They saw in him an older brother to whom they could turn for advice and help.

The late Advocate Abraham Chitayat left behind a barren emptiness and much sadness.  Another beloved and revered figure has passed away. May God bless his soul.
