The 1995 and 1996 issues of the newsletter of "The Iraqi Jewish Association of Ontario" review events of the Hebrew year 5756 (1995/6) in the community. Among the events held were community evenings centered on each of the festivals. The evening celebrating the last day of the Passover festival in the custom of Iraqi Jewry and the Santak Kathra ceremony was especially memorable. Another regular activity was the monthly lecture given by members of the community on a wide range of subjects, each in the area of the lecturer's expertise. The young people of the community likewise gather once a month in the "Young Sephardi" framework at the JCC building in Toronto, to discuss topics of Sephardi interest. The group is growing stronger and stronger, and membership stands at about 100.
A special occasion was devoted to mark twenty years since the founding of the Iraqi Jewish Association of Ontario. At present Dr. Naim Dallal and Saleh Mukamel serve as Honorary Presidents, and Renee Dallal serves as the President of the Association. For members who are interested, the Association acquires books of Jewish-Iraqi interest. Among these are "Fascinating Life and Sensational Death" by Gourji Bekhor, and the Passover Haggadah in three languages, English, Hebrew and Arabic. The newsletter also reports a series of lectures on Sephardic studies in the framework of the Centre for Jewish Studies at York University.
The last issue of the newsletter of July 1996 gives a summary of activities and a comprehensive annual report of events in the community.
